Islamabad witnessed a tense situation after police officers reportedly stormed the National Press Club, causing damage and allegedly assaulting journalists and staff inside the premises.
According to media reports, the police entered the club during a protest, mistaking journalists for demonstrators. Witnesses claim that furniture and cameras were broken, while several journalists were manhandled in the cafeteria area.
President of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Afzal Butt, condemned the incident, stating that such actions are “unacceptable and intolerable.” He added that the press community has always cooperated with authorities, and such treatment would not be ignored.
National Press Club Secretary Nayyar Ali also criticized the police action, highlighting that entry without prior permission violates standard procedures.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi took notice of the incident and has directed the Inspector General of Police to submit a detailed report. He assured that those responsible would face disciplinary action, emphasizing that violence against journalists would not be tolerated.
