India Warns Pakistan of High Floods in River Sutlej

Lahore: India has informed Pakistan about the risk of high level floods in the River Sutlej, according to the Ministry of Water Resources. The Indian High Commission in Pakistan officially shared the alert with the ministry.

As reported by Geo News the ministry confirmed that Harike downstream and Ferozepur downstream in Sutlej are expected to face high flood levels starting from September 1 at 8 a.m.. The ministry has already issued flood alerts to concerned institutions and provincial governments to ensure timely safety measures.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has also issued a warning regarding the possible high floods. The authority has placed nine districts on high alert, including Kasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, and Pakpattan.

According to PDMA officials, additional districts at risk include Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Muzaffargarh. Authorities have directed deputy commissioners (DCs) of these districts to take immediate steps to handle any emergency situation caused by the floodwaters.

Possible Impact of Floods

Experts warn that the flood surge from India may cause serious challenges in Punjab, especially in low-lying areas near the Sutlej River. Local administrations have been urged to strengthen embankments, prepare evacuation plans, and ensure the availability of relief camps and medical support for affected families.

Government’s Response

The Ministry of Water Resources assured that it is in constant coordination with provincial disaster management teams. Authorities emphasized that precautionary measures are necessary to protect lives and reduce damage to crops and infrastructure.
