Shia Leader in Gilgit-Baltistan Praises Sahara Welfare Organization’s ‘Water for Every Home’ Campaign

Gilgit (Daily Kausar):The leader of the Shia community in Gilgit-Baltistan, Agha Rahat Hussain Al-Hussaini, praised the Sahara Welfare Organization during his Friday sermon for launching the “Water for Every Home” campaign in Danyore. He described the initiative as a clear example of community service and stressed that the spirit of helping humanity makes even the most difficult challenges easier to overcome. Agha Rahat’s Message of Service In his sermon, Agha Rahat highlighted that service to humanity is a fundamental value for society. He said that the Sahara Welfare Organization’s campaign reflects this spirit, showing that collective efforts can bring relief to people even during difficult circumstances. He appealed to other institutions, welfare groups, and members of society to take inspiration from this campaign. According to him, the initiative sets an example of how unity and compassion can become sources of strength for the entire community. About the ‘Water for Every Home’ Campaign The “Water for Every Home” campaign (known locally as “Ghar Ghar Pani Mua’im”) is an initiative by Sahara Welfare Organization to ease the hardship faced by residents of Danyore due to limited access to clean water. Water shortages are not uncommon in several parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Although the region is home to glaciers and rivers, many localities face distribution challenges because of infrastructure gaps, seasonal variations, and population growth. In this context, Sahara Welfare Organization’s campaign is seen as a practical step to support households and meet an essential need. The initiative involves mobilizing available resources to supply water to local communities. While modest in scale, it has been welcomed by residents as a timely and much-needed effort. Sahara Welfare Organization’s Work in Gilgit-Baltistan Sahara Welfare Organization (SWO) is a community-based group that has been active in humanitarian services for several years. The organization has engaged in various relief and welfare efforts in Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly during times of crisis. Its work includes providing assistance to families during natural disasters, supporting vulnerable households, and carrying out small-scale development and welfare projects. The “Water for Every Home” campaign is one of the recent efforts that has drawn attention due to its direct impact on people’s daily lives. By addressing a basic need such as water, SWO has strengthened its reputation as a welfare group that acts quickly and directly for the benefit of the community. Water Access Challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan Water is a vital resource in Gilgit-Baltistan, yet access is uneven across the region. Despite the presence of glaciers and freshwater sources, communities often face shortages due to a lack of infrastructure, outdated pipelines, and increasing demand. Reports over the years have highlighted that both urban and rural areas struggle with water supply issues. Seasonal variations, such as reduced flow during dry months, make the problem worse. In towns like Danyore, these shortages can affect household life, hygiene, and overall health. Efforts like Sahara Welfare Organization’s water campaign provide temporary relief, but they also highlight the urgent need for long-term solutions from government and development agencies. Community Response Although no official survey has been released, local sources report that residents of Danyore have welcomed the “Water for Every Home” initiative. For many families, the campaign has brought a sense of support at a time when daily life is affected by shortages. Observers note that welfare efforts of this kind often generate appreciation among local communities. They also help encourage more people to volunteer or donate in support of similar initiatives. Team:                                 Agha Rahat’s Influence As a respected religious leader, Agha Rahat Hussain Al-Hussaini’s words carry weight among the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. His endorsement of the “Water for Every Home” campaign has not only encouraged Sahara Welfare Organization but has also drawn wider attention to the issue of water scarcity in the region. His appeal for unity and cooperation may also inspire other welfare groups and institutions to take up similar community service projects. In past years, his sermons have often highlighted social and welfare issues, making his recognition an important source of encouragement for local initiatives. A Model of Collective Responsibility The case of Danyore reflects a larger truth: sustainable solutions to community problems often begin with local initiatives. While larger infrastructure projects and government programs are essential, grassroots campaigns play a crucial role in providing immediate relief and building a culture of service. Agha Rahat’s praise for Sahara Welfare Organization highlights the need for collective responsibility. He reminded the community that serving others is a shared duty, and even small contributions can have a meaningful impact. The “Water for Every Home” campaign in Danyore stands as an important example of community-driven action in Gilgit-Baltistan. By recognizing and appreciating the effort, Agha Rahat Hussain Al-Hussaini has not only acknowledged the contribution of Sahara Welfare Organization but also sent a wider message about the importance of compassion and cooperation. As challenges such as water scarcity continue to affect the region, the initiative serves as a reminder that solutions begin with a spirit of unity and service. The story of Danyore illustrates how even modest efforts, carried out with sincerity, can become a source of hope and progress for society.

Glacier Burst in Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan: Floods Create Crisis in Villages, Rescue Underway

A severe natural disaster struck Ghizer district in Gilgit-Baltistan when a glacier burst in Gopis Tehsil at Tili Das. The sudden incident has triggered powerful flash floods, submerging multiple villages, damaging property, and blocking the river’s natural flow. Officials confirmed that while the floods caused significant financial losses, there have been no reported loss of lives so far.   The glacier outburst has created a massive water blockage, forming a lake and raising fears of further devastation if the pressure builds and releases downstream.   Government Confirms the Incident According to Faizullah Faraq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, floodwaters have already submerged several villages. He stated: “People have faced severe financial losses due to the glacier burst, but fortunately, no lives have been lost so far.” The government confirmed that over 50 people trapped in the affected area have been rescued successfully, while rescue operations are ongoing.   Glacier Outburst at Tili Das: Details of the Event The glacier burst occurred in Tili Das, Gopis (Ghizer district), blocking the natural river channel. As a result: The river’s flow stopped. A large temporary lake has formed. Adjacent villages are under threat of submersion. Local residents report that within hours of the glacier breaking, water levels rose dramatically, forcing families to evacuate their homes. Current Situation on the Ground Villages Affected: Several villages are submerged or partially underwater. Property Damage: Houses, farmland, and local infrastructure have suffered heavy damage. Rescues: More than 50 stranded people were rescued in emergency operations. Relief Operations: Emergency relief including tents, food, and medical aid is being dispatched. Officials fear further flooding if the newly formed lake bursts its banks, potentially sending destructive water waves downstream. Provincial Government’s Response A government spokesperson confirmed that the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan is personally monitoring the situation to ensure minimal loss of life and property. “The Chief Minister himself is supervising rescue and relief operations to prevent further damage,” the spokesperson added. Teams from the district administration, Rescue 1122, and Disaster Management Authority are present at the site, working around the clock.   Community & Eyewitness Accounts Residents of the affected areas describe the event as sudden and devastating. One local elder explained: “The glacier broke with a roar, and within hours our fields and homes were under water. We barely managed to escape.” Many families are now displaced, taking shelter in safer areas, while fearing for their crops and livestock.   Historical Context: Glacier Bursts in Gilgit-Baltistan Glacier bursts and floods are not new in Gilgit-Baltistan. The region has over 7,000 glaciers, many of which are vulnerable due to: Rising global temperatures Glacial melting from climate change Unstable terrain in mountainous valleys Incidents like this are examples of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which Pakistan has experienced multiple times in recent years. In 2022, Gilgit-Baltistan witnessed several glacier-related floods that displaced hundreds of families. Climate experts continue to warn that such disasters will increase in frequency and intensity.   Climate Change Connection Pakistan contributes less than 1% to global carbon emissions, yet faces some of the worst impacts of climate change. Gilgit-Baltistan is especially vulnerable due to: Melting glaciers at an accelerated pace Erratic weather patterns and heavy rainfall Weak infrastructure in remote valleys This latest glacier burst in Ghizer once again highlights Pakistan’s climate vulnerability. Rescue & Relief Efforts Rescue teams on the ground report that: Over 50 stranded individuals have been rescued so far. Emergency relief supplies have been dispatched. Medical units are treating minor injuries and providing aid. Disaster Management Authority is assessing the water pressure in the newly formed lake. Despite these efforts, residents remain concerned about further flooding if the natural dam collapses. Risks Ahead If the temporary lake created by the glacier burst gives way, it could cause: Massive downstream flooding Destruction of homes, roads, and bridges Further displacement of communities Threat to low-lying settlements along the Gilgit and Indus rivers Experts stress the urgent need to channel the lake water in a controlled manner to reduce pressure and prevent a catastrophic burst.   Conclusion   The glacier burst in Ghizer’s Gopis Tehsil (Tili Das) is yet another reminder of the growing climate challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan. While the government’s swift rescue operations saved lives, the material damage is extensive, and the threat of further flooding remains high. As rescue operations continue and the Chief Minister personally monitors the situation, authorities must also focus on long-term climate resilience strategies to protect vulnerable mountain communities from future disasters.
